Modeling, Representing, and Configuring Restricted Part-Whole Relations
نویسنده
چکیده
Part-whole relations are the backbone of configuration systems. In this paper, part-whole relations are combined with other relations and restrictions leading to here-called restricted aggregates. Depending on what is given, aggregates, parts, or/and relations between parts, different tasks have to be solved. General aggregation reasoning chunks are developed and represented with a configuration language. The approach is applied to the domain of constructing scene interpretations.

Essential , mandatory , and shared parts in conceptual data models ?
This chapter focuses on formally representing life cycle semantics of part-whole relations in conceptual data models by utilizing the temporal modality. We approach this by resorting to the temporal conceptual data modeling language ERV T and extend it with the novel notion of status relations. This enables a precise axiomatization of the constraints for essential parts and wholes compared to m...
متن کاملRepresenting Natural Kinds by Spatial Inclusion and Containment
Biomedical terminologies lack a clear-cut understanding of the semantics of part-whole relations. In order to design a conceptually adequate ontology for the biomedical domain, we investigate different forms of ontological dependencies between parts and wholes. We then suggest, for natural kinds at least, a move away from modeling the relations between parts and wholes and advocate instead conc...
متن کاملA Research Note on Representing Part-Whole Relations in Conceptual Modeling
Empirical research is an important methodology for the study of conceptual modeling practices. The recently published article “Representing Part–Whole Relations in Conceptual Modeling: An Empirical Evaluation” (Shanks et al. 2008) uses the lens of ontology to study a relatively sophisticated aspect of conceptual modeling practice, the representation of aggregation and composition. It contends t...
متن کاملA concept language extended with di erent kinds of transitive
Motivated by applications that demand for the adequate representation of part-whole relations, diierent possibilities of representing transitive relations in terminological knowledge representation systems are investigated. A well-known concept language, ALC, is extended by three diierent kinds of transitive roles. It turns out that these extensions diier largely in expressiveness and computati...

Lexical relations organise and structure vocabulary. They reflect relations in the real world. Meronymy is the lexical relation between a word representing a part, and a word representing a whole, such as (finger partOf hand). Meronymy is of special importance in biomedicine: structure and process are organised along partitive axes. Anatomy, for example, is rich in part-whole relations. This im...
